Dave's Tower Pictures

These are pictures that I took during the erection of the new W9GR Tower. It's a US Tower HDX555 heavy duty self supporting 55 foot tower with a mast that extends another 12 feet, bringing the overall height of the structure to 67 feet.

Sep05_07.jpg - This is NOT a tower picture. It's Sara's new Sheltie puppy named "Sandy."

Here are the pictures of the foundation work:

Aug22_04.jpg - The backhoe is digging the hole for the tower base.

Aug22_07.jpg - Another view of the backhoe work.

Aug22_12.jpg - The hole is done! It is 7 feet deep.

Aug22_16.jpg - The rebar cage is being prepared.

Aug22_20.jpg - Ready to pour the concrete!

Aug22_28.jpg - Pour, favor!

Aug26_01.jpg - The tower base is done!

Next, the tower itself arrived. Here are the installation pictures:

Sep05_11.jpg - The tower shows up. It is in the truck to the left. The crane is in the center of the picture. Bud, the crane operator, is the same guy who put up our log house shell four years ago. But, he brought his BIG (35 ton) crane today - definitely overkill for lifting an itty bitty 1/2 ton radio tower!

Sep05_14.jpg - The tower being unloaded from the truck by the crane.

Sep05_15.jpg - The tower is being lifted over the granny house by the crane.

Sep05_16.jpg - The crane is lowering the tower to its location on the base.

Sep05_17.jpg - Tower is in place, attached by hinge bolts to the base!

Sep05_18.jpg - Another view of the installed tower.

Sep05_19.jpg - Another view of the installed tower.

Sep05_20.jpg - Closeup of the tower base assembly.

Sep05_22.jpg - This shows where the tower is with respect to the house and the garage.

Sep09_01.jpg - Now I have the raising fixture installed, with the cable threaded through the tower's pulley.

Sep09_03.jpg - Look closely - the tower has been raised about 6" off the ground by the raising fixture! I put the tower back on the ground after I did this test, since the base hasn't yet cured for it's 28 day minimum period. On September 19, I'll be able to put the tower up!

Sep23_02.jpg - This is how I'm mounting the TV antenna. The TV antenna goes on the fixed short mast; the HF beam will go on the rotatable mast that goes through the center of the tower..

Sep23_04.jpg - Today's project was to get just the TV antenna up. The HF beam isn't assembled yet. Here's the TV antenna, mounted on the fixed mast, with the tower partially raised to clear the TV antenna's boom.

Sep23_07.jpg - The tower is raised to the vertical position, but it hasn't been cranked up yet. That is, the tower sections are still "nested." The tower itself is only 22 feet high here.

Sep23_09.jpg - The tower is UP for the first time! TV reception is MUCH better with the TV antenna up on the tower, rather than on the mast on the back of the new garage, where it was actually shooting through the house.

Sep23_10.jpg - Here's what the tower looks like in relation to the house.

Sep24_11.jpg - It's a sign! It's a sign! And, it's SOOOO corny!
